Rolled over to the Drag to check out Five Guys, which I had been told was GREAT, AWESOME AND UNREAL. You know, one of those places like 'In and Out Burger' that you always hear about it but when you actually eat there, it disappoints. Welll, that's what happpened. Burgers = very good. Very tasty. Fries = awful. They were like pieces of potatoes (I know, that is what fries are) but they didn't taste like fries, if that makes any sense. Dining experience = average. They put the food in a bag and you wind up eating out of the bag and wrappers. In other words, there are not plates for dine-in. I thought this strange, to say the least. I think it makes sense when you are blind drunk at 2 am but at noon on Friday, I would rather have a plate and not eat out of a bag. Overall = decent. Not GREAT. Not awful. I wouldn't drive back over to eat again (other than perhaps when UT is back in session) but it was fine.
I ate at Chris Madrid's before the Spurs game tonight. That has nothing to do with your thread, but damn it was good.
Ate there Sat. afternoon and came away with the same exact review. Nothing that makes want to hurry back when I crave a cheeseburger. Will also agree that nothing beats a Chris Madrid burger before a Spurs game and still nothing beats Top Notch in Austin for me.
Drat if the negative reviews are true. I used to eat at the original Five Guys in the late 80s and early to mid 90s. So I was elated to find out they would be here. I hope they have not grown too big for their britches and sacrificed product for expansion. I am going to try it out this week sometime and we'll see. I am trying not to let my past memory dictate the present experience. I say this because in my mind I would take a Five Guys from back in the day over Whataburger any day and every day of the week. I know deep down this is not true and it is likely I would refuse to choose one over the other. I will try to be open taste budded.
I went there on the Saturday afternoon on the way out of town after Thanksgiving, and thought it was a solid B+. I liked the fries. I guess that's why Austin has so many burger joints. Something for everyone.
I went there for the first time yesterday and my official review: meh. It was OK, but I probably won't go back.
Had it Friday. Was very unimpressed. The decor and general principle reminded me of Mooyah up north, but the execution was lacking. Given how long they have been around, I have to assume Mooyah is either imitating 5 guys, or was started by an ex-5 guys employee. Either way, Mooyah does it better, IMO.
Bummer. I can guarantee you guys that if you are anything less than knocked down in glee from their food it is not the same as when they were local to the DC area. I guess expansion has affected the quality of product. That sucks. I am going to have to go in and try it for myself but it will be with hesitation. Maybe I should not mess with my memories and just not go and leave it at that. I could have a Casino burger instead.
Went to Five Guys for lunch today. Overall, very average. I can't see myself ever going back. And it was about $10 for a single patty meal. Mighty Fine blows these guys out of the water in both taste and price.
That does it. I ain't a gonna go in there at all and let my memories of when they were delicious stay the way they are.

I know this has been on here a while, but I finally got into Five Guys as well. I went to the Harker Heights location since I'm up here in Bell Co. First off, let me say I waited in line for way too long with just 2 people in front of me. Then I get up there and order my food, which didn't take too long, but it's a rip to get a single patty cheeseburger meal for $10. I can actually get a sit down lunch at the nicest restaurant in Temple (not including tax tip and drink granted) for that price. Then I go to the machine to fill up my drink.. No Dr. Pepper. WTF? I nearly cancelled my order right then. How am I supposed to eat a burger with no Dr. Pepper?! So I get my Mr. Pibb Extra..which tastes like watered down DP with dirt in and and proceed to wait 20 minutes to get my food. Ok, so I get it, and no lie, like everyone says the fries are all over and enough to feed 3 people. Only problem with that is that while I am a big eater I want to only eat one order of fries and only pay for one as well. Now, I really liked the fries. They do taste MUCH more like fresh potato than 'fries' which I actually appreciate. Alright...so now it is burger time. I take the thing out of it's foil wrapper and it looks like a regular burger, just a bit messier. I am a bit miffed that I had to explain to these Yankees that mustard goes on a burger, otherwise it isn't a burger, but I digress. So I go in for the first bite and find it tastes like a burger. I mean it has a pretty small patty to be over $5 for the sandwich alone. I get done eating it, and well, it is a pretty small burger. It tasted fine, but didn't fill my burger compartment in my belly, and as I said before I can only eat so many fries. I won't be back again. Recap: Crappy slow service. No DP. Expensive as a sit down meal. Unique fries. Decent Burger. I give it an over all rating of C+.
went there yesterday (arboretum)... not bad. bacon cheeseburger was great. i liked the fries. the regular order is MORE than enough. you really get your money's worth on those fries. the pepsi was delicious. i recommend.
omahawk, you recommend paying about $4 for more fries than you can eat, and $6 or 7 for a burger? When in Austin, drininking pepsi with a burger? yea.. that probably says it all... As I have said before.. IF you are going to eat there, remember to bring your Dr. Pepper with you.
chango, Yea, it was supposed to be tongue in cheek. I really thought it was ok, but overpriced for what you get, and I do enjoy DP with a burger. Enough so that I can easily find a place to get DP with a burger that is just as good. Also, it might be personal preference, but I don't think you should have to ask for mustard on a burger. Seems that is the more traditional southern way, just like ketchup is traditional for NYC, and mayo in Ohio.
Went to Dans on Lamar the other day, that was a tasty burger. Not my first time and hopefully not my last.
