I'm surprised it is not much higher.

Paying people not to work = "Jobs bill".

    Washington has no clue.

Waiving the white flag so quickly? Cognitive dissonance at its finest.

Well, my mother-in-law is living with us and currently on unemployment. She's been on it for at least a year and doesn't seem willing to get her **** in gear and get a job. She's a low level worker (secretary, office person) meaning she almost has no incentive to get a job. She would probably only increase her earnings slightly AND actually have to work.

It's complete ******** that a grown-assed adult would rather sit on her *** over getting a job and contributing.

    HHD,
That seems like common sense to me. It is amazing that Obama's economic advisors are not capable of understanding such a basic concept. But then again, I am sure most of them majored in economics. [IMG]

people used to have to work to survive. parents instilled a work ethic in their kids. kids coming out of school today dont want to work their way up, they want the glass ring handed to them. americans dont want to do labor intensive work. government and sociologcal factors have created a lazy and entitled workforce. i would say this feeling of apathy toward working is also at historic levels which would account for the statistics.

While I do not disagree that the work ethic of many Americans has declined in modern times, we have never had the type of disincentive for productivity as we do under Obama. I shudder to think about how much damage a 2nd term from this socialist will cause.

I Look at the many cities/states with high unemployment . The reality is those cities are not coming back and many of those people will have to move to where the jobs are
BUT with unemployment benefits being extended and extended there is no real incentive to move.
will it be hard? Damn straight it will be hard to pick up and move. ask any military family that can move every 2-3 years

but it has to be done IF people actually want to get on with their lives.

I have to laugh when BO says stimulus money will put people back to work.Does anyone really think the average former office worker will be willing go out and do the manual labor of construction jobs when they can live on the unemployment foodstamps and other bennies?
We are doing these people no favors .

Well there is a mulitplier effect. When people get construction jobs -- and a lot of construction workers can't find jobs that pay what they are used to -- then they have money to spend in restaurants, stores, auto repair shops and the like. Disincentives to work are bad for the economy long term. Short term folks having enough cash to stay afloat is a good thing. It's not that different than Wall Street. When folks learn how to make money without really creating value or delivering something, the system needs a little tweaking.

There's a ton of industries/careers out there that aren't coming back any time soon. My wife is an architect. She lost her job in October 2009 and has yet to find anything anywhere near us. We know several other architects, several have not found anything for 3+ years. She's been off unemployment for over a year and half. Nothing you can really do about certain fields like that, when no one is building/designing. Heck, the big firms are chasing down smaller contracts that used to go to smaller firms, so those smaller firms are having to lay off more people. the few lucky ones have taken pay cuts as well, just to keep their jobs.

Back to my MIL. My wife works full time as an ESL teacher and also teaches an adult ESL class at night. I work full time as a sub and coach soccer 4 nights a week plus all day on Saturday. I'd love to call it a day after 4PM-ish; however, I have student loans to pay and we want to be able to go on vacations.

I just went home for a few minutes to get my laptop power cord and - lo and behold - she's sitting on her *** watching The Price Is Right. Pisses me off to no end.

Yep Knox - some people have no shame. They will suck any opportunity dry for as long as they can. It doesn't matter if it's government unemployment or son-in-laws. I feel bad for you, man. I would guess your wife wouldn't be behind the "give her two months and kick her *** out" plan.
