All I need is someone to follow up on a broken thumb after initially taking it to an urgent care place. Nobody stands out as particularly trustworthy (since the guys making the diagnosis are the same ones who get paid if I need surgery) or reasonably priced. Most likely I'll just need someone who can competantly pick the best type of splint / cast but there's nobody I can find getting good reviews who doesn't seem triggery-happy with regards to surgery.

If a second opinion is viable - and after an experience with a thumb problem... Susan Adler was a referral from my primary M.D. Office is down by Seton on Medical Pkwy.

This, with a caveat : my thumb clearly has not been broken, but kinda/ similar to that carpel tunnel- type affliction. My impression of Dr. Adler is that she is not "quick-to-cut".

Don Davis is an excellent doctor, and is certainly not one to advise surgery unless he feels it is absolutely necessary. My 83-yr-old mom tore her miniscus, and Don wanted to avoid surgery so he had her in PT. Every time she compained about how long it seemed to be taking to heal, I kept reminding her she could have surgery, and her answer was no......not if Dr. Davis doesn't think so. She's almost at 100% now.

It would be pretty unusual for you to need surgery for a broken thumb unless it is significantly displaced or you displaced or tore a tendon or ligament.

Go to a upper extremity/hand specialist (ortho) bc most general ortho guys don't focus on hands although a family doc worth anything should be able to assess to see if you need ortho care.

I recommend Greg Vagner, M.D. with Orthopaedic Specialists of Austin. He's one of the smartest guys I know and an old childhood friend.

I'm going to throw out my obligatory recommendation for Dr. Frosty Moore @ Westlake Orthopedics.

He handled my broken clavicle (got thrown from one of my horses almost 4 years ago) & 1.5 years ago did a total knee on my Mom. He's a Texas Ex & played baseball on the 1975 National Championship team. He's also very active with Rodeo Austin as the chief medical director & donates a lot of his time out there.
