This time, President Trump told an audience of soldiers that they'd be getting a 10% raise for 2019, their first pay hike in over 10 years. Truth is, they will be getting a 2.6% raise, making this the 30th consecutive year of military pay raises. The 2.6% raise is the same being given to civilian-sector Federal employees, and had broad support from both sides of the aisles. link to an article in the Military Times

To make matters worse, Trump made it all about himself. He started off by saying that "we" gave a big raise, but then repeated it twice with the "we" replaced by "I": "[W]e got you a big one. I got you a big one. I got you a big one." Link to CNN article. The man's egomania is flabbergasting.

What a monster. I hope none of them die from the small, less than stated raise.

But to be clear, it is truly sad that the US President is such a narcissist. It is also truly sad that lying by the President should be expected at this time. They all lie, so I have been a bit desensitized to it, not just Trump though. I wasn't up in arms about Obama's lies either.

But dang. Why lie about this? Why does it matter? Even if he did get them a 10% raise? Why grandstand? And if you are lying about it, how does that help you or your interests? It just makes people dislike you more. Stupid stupid man.

Not a good idea to lie about something like this. However, I'm still surprised that people act like presidents don't lie all of the time. I'm still heavily paying out of my pockets for Obama's ACA lie.

I'm not all that concerned about how the President's statement impacts the underlying issue. You are right -- solider weren't injured by virtue of standing in front of a CIC who falsely said pay would be increasing by 10% next year.

I'm somewhat more concerned about the damage President Trump is doing to the presidency. But I think that will be reversed quite quickly when he is replaced by someone with at least a modicum of competence and integrity.

My real concern is the damage President Trump is doing to the Republican brand. Droves of women and suburbanites are leaving the party, and they won't ever support anyone who supported President Trump. That includes pretty much all Republicans, so there is a vacuum and Democrats are filling it. If things keep going the way they are going, we could be stuck with the Democrats firmly in control for the next decade or more. And don't count on the Supreme Court to save us, because I don't think the Democrats would hesitate to expand the Court to 11 to offset the seat stolen from them in 2016.

I know many of you think I'm a liberal, but truth is I am very concerned about having liberals in control of the U.S. government. That would be almost as bad as having President Trump in control.

To some degree or another, all politicians are guilty of lying about the impact their policies will have and/or what policies they may support in the future. President Obama was one of the worst in both regards, which is one of many reasons I think he wasn't a particularly good president.

President Trump takes it to a new level, by lying about objectively false facts. He just makes **** up, and then doubles down when confronted with the truth. We can't even get to the point of debating which policies to pursue, because truth itself has become an amorphous concept. To me, that is fundamentally different from what President Obama did, and dramatically worse.

Now he's going to have his staff back into a military pay increase of 10% so they can say he's not a liar.

A lot of Obama's lies about the Iran deal and the ACA are way worse than than anything Trump did. Trump lies to feed his ego which I don't like but he is what he is. Obama's lies actually hurt people(like me) and damaged America. As far as elections go it's way too early to say Trump's effect. One mid-term election doesn't mean we've lost women and suburbanites. Both can be fickle voters. In fact, as far as midterm elections go it was a mild loss. I've heard all of this gloom and doom stuff since Trump was elected and none of it has come to pass. I'm not saying you're wrong either because you may end up being right but you're jumping the gun as of now.

I know it won't happen but I wish the Republican party would fade away and the Libertarian Party would become the US conservative party. It would have to change a bit to make that happen.

I too prefer a divided government where negotiated legislation is required to move anything into law. It tends to hold the extremists at bay. The only downside was the unbridled spending that would occur as each side approved the opposite sides pet programs. Of course, the reality is that neither side exercises any sort of financial constraint when they own the reigns of power either.

That number just keeps growing regardless of one-party power or divided government. If history is a guide, it may actually grow at a more rapid rate under a single majority party rule.

If you're boss said he was giving everyone a 10% raise and only give a 2.6% raise, he would have garbage all over his front lawn. Has the CEO of a 500 ever, and what happened to her?

And the "right" was up in arms then yet defends Trump now. Do you see why someone might perceive a little hypocrisy?

Has anybody defended Trump for this? I haven't seen anybody. However, any time I mentioned Obama's lies to libs (not here) they were telling me I'm a stupid Fox News watcher. I've never seen you or any other lib on here admit to Obama's lies. Most Trump supporters here know Trump lies. About all presidents do. Reagan was my favorite president and look at the lies he told during Iran-Contra.

ALL Trump supporters knew he was a liar when they voted for him. Was that true for Ronald Reagan?

That I have no idea. Everybody knew about Bill Clinton and didn't care. People knew about Hillary's lies and didn't care.

I don't think its that the GOP doesn't care when Trump lies...we do. Or that the Dems didn't care when Clinton lied...they did. It's just that we all retreat to a place of "my team". Have all presidents lied...probably. But all presidents haven't lied as frequently and about such minor stuff as Trump.

As a GOP backer, I would say the worst thing about his petty lies is that it, along with his ceaseless pissing on everyone makes it very, very easy for people to coalesce around "anti-Trump". And while its true that the media and the left were always going to be "anti-Trump" forces, he has made it very easy to recruit that middle 30% of the population that determine the outcome of elections.

There aren't many people willing to defend "Trump", there are a few GOP that are willing to defend a semi-GOP Whitehouse inhabitant simply for the sake of party and power.

He has damaged the GOP brand. Will it linger more than one election cycle? hard to know. But Trump has virtually assured himself that he will be a one term president.

This! It's moved well beyond "spin".

Trump has fundamentally changed the composition of not only the Republican party but the public perception of our government. It will take generations to recover from this mess. I believe history will not be kind to Trump nor his enablers.

 His accomplishments will outweigh his white lies. Yes, you libs will continue to hate him unaware of any good he has done because of your MSM brainwashing. You're not even aware that this is Trump's economy. History will laugh at you uninformed libs.

Husker, we can have cordial disagreements but if you keep trying to get personal with Trump voters(which you do quite often) I'm going to hit back. I'm not going to put up with your nonsense.

I read your link. It reads like a Kendall Briles or a Lane Kiffin resume.

Almost all of the economic positives are on the same trend line that 8 years of Obama provided.

Tariffs aren't working out so good.

The tax cuts are a joke. Nothing more than a transfer of wealth. Supply side economics work in a vacuum. Some reinvest. However, most put their savings into offshore accounts, buy larger vacation homes or bigger boats.

He's a con man. Just like Trump University and his "charity".

I have to admit it too; I've never seen one Liberal (now's your chance Seattle) care one bit about what Obama said concerning Obamacare.

"You can keep your doctor" meant those who had current insurance would not be impacted. That is exactly what he was selling. This is a huge lie.

"The individual mandate is not a tax" meant just what it said. He was trying to deceive us and ironically the Conservative Supreme Court Justice bailed him out by declaring it to be so.

It is my opinion that the Left doesn't care about it because they just don't. They think they are right and will do whatever it takes. It's just like that Oakland Mayor who is arrogantly standing by her decision to tip off illegal immigrants about impending ICE raids. She has elevated herself to Sainthood and doesn't care what anyone thinks. The law is irrelevant.
