Caught it pay per view the other night with the wife and kids. This is a different Wonka. He's younger, before he made his factory, and full of hope and dreams. It's a "sweeter" story. This Wonka does not have that darker/creeper element that Depp and Wilder brought to the role. It's geared even more towards the kids than the other Wonka movies. It does have the best Oompah Loompah ever though! And he plays a significant role. Cute, light hearted, fun movie. Hollywood needs to make more stuff like this.
The Oompah Loompa was the best part of the otherwise unwatchable movie. We coughed up the $20 to rent it as well and I ended up scrolling through videos on my phone half way through.
I missed the Johnny Depp version, but I didn’t find Wilder dark and creepy. Thought he was a cool cat, plus handled those annoying punks Augustus, Salt and Violet nicely.
