Major flooding event in Austin area going on right now. Onion Creek at historic flood levels; Barton Creek flooding, with likely major damage to Barton Springs pool; water over Lamar Boulevard, again; there's a guy phoning a TV station who is sitting 20 feet up in a tree in south Austin, a guy who drove his car into high water and watched Onion Creek gradually bury the vehicle from his new nest; the weather station at Austin Bergstrom airport, located on the ground floor, has flooded, canceling all flights in and out of the airport, which includes the Horns flight to Iowa later today (so far); IH-35 closed around Buda, both directions, due to water over road.
Almost four inches at my house so far, and this is forecast to be just the first of three waves of rainfall, to end by tomorrow around noon.

It has quit raining, but the problem at the airport is the weather forecasting equipment got flooded. They can't tell the planes the info needed to land or take off safely. Once repairs are made, flights can continue.
Meanwhile, the boy genius in the tree is...still up in the tree.

Good ol Austin Indep School District elected to have school today.
At LASA / LBJ... lights off all morning (my daughter senior at LASA).
Sitting in the halls. Toronado warning early in the morning.
Reverse evacuation (term for lock down... no one can leave).

AISD keeps daring the weather at all costs in order to maintain attendance-related funding$$ from government. But guess what...when kids are at all schools to start the day ... now they, or their parents, or buses, will soon have to get everyone back home... in all the rest of the handicapped traffic both commercial and private, local and passing through.

Right now, 300 low-water crossings in the area are closed. The fix for the above issue is at the legislative or school board level to allow off days for weather safety and not get dinged for it in funding. Idiotic. AISD is way too risky when it comes to school/student safety. They always error on the side of "It may not be too bad."

Late this morning, airport closed and all Austin Cap Metro closed. AISD opened for business. Replaying KEYETV late weather last night... One Computer model had up to a foot of rain!!! on KEYE-TV after the ball game. Conservative was 2-4 " for Austin. But there was the chance of a lot of it.

while most of your post is insightful, the above quote is not accurate. Cap Rail closed down due to debris on the tracks and low water crossings flooded. The buses kept running, even though some routes had to use detours.
