Not necessarily your favorite bands but which do you think are the best? 1.The Beatles 2. The Rolling Stones 3. Led Zeppelin 4. The Who 5. The Doors
This list is always a little subjective. They may not be top five, but Van Halen was a great one but split up too soon.
no Who. No Doors. Beatles of course. Stones for sure Zep maybe. AC-DC deserves consideration as does VH. GNR wasn't around long enough for "all time" anything. U2 aint my cup of tea, but a lot of people have worshipped them for a long time. OK. maybe who. but no doors. they made a few good songs, and a whole lot of unlistenable noise. If LSD is required to tolerate a band, then they aint great.
Led Zeppelin Queen Rush The Who The Beatles Almost every band that followed these bands, copied them in some way....
Pink Floyd deserves mention here. I think the Beatles and Zeppelin are about required to be on this list.
rip, no disrespect, but who copied Rush and Queen? they're unique...can't think of a lot of bands that have obvious influences...educate me.
For the sake of discussion, I'd consider ELO or maybe CCR. IMO the top 3 would have to be the beatles, beach boys and the stones.
I was stuck between the doors and floyd as my #5, and eventually went with the doors. Others honorable mentions i thought about were ccr and u2.
1-tie. Stones-Beatles-Zeppelin 4. U2 5. Pink Floyd No Aerosmith, sure they have been popular for 50 years but they have sucked for 49 years.
Rush has influenced a lot of bands and individual musicians. Primus, Foo Fighters, and Smashing Pumpkins have noted Rush as an important influence.
The list begins and ends with Chuck Berry. I think the argument is for 2-6, which I'd place as (in chronological order): Buddy Holly & the Crickets The Beatles Hendrix Led Zeppelin AC/DC With another dozen bands you could make a strong case for...U2 is not one of them. Rock & Roll's been going down hill every since Buddy Holly died.
My friend and I were having this discussion a few weeks ago. He stated that no U.S. bands make his top five of all-time list. Does any American band break the British top five? His (and my) top five bands of all-time Rolling Stones Beatles Pink Floyd The Who Led Zeppelin U.S. possibilities- most likely to break into the top five: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Other possibilities: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, CCR, The Doors, Aerosmith, JImi Hendrix, REM, Talking Heads, Grateful Dead, Van Halen, Prince and the Revolution, Beach Boys, Velvet Underground, Metallica, The Ramones
Interesting question, and I guess my answer would depend on how to interpret the question. By best band, do you mean merely, best band, or most influential band, most popular band, or some combination thereof? Also, since this question asks specifically about bands, I would not consider individuals like Jimi Hendrix. If the question was about the greatest or most influential individual, then the answer is obviously Hendrix, and it's not even close, but since we're discussing bands, I have to agree that the big three would have to be Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones and The Beatles. Which order they're in probably depends on your individual tastes, but those are the most obvious choices, IMHO. Good arguments can also be made for Pink Floyd, The Who, and others, but one that I will mention is Cream. As another poster mentioned regarding VH, Cream's lifespan was probably too short for consideration on an all-time best list, but nobody else mentioned them, and I think they at least deserve to be mentioned in the conversation. They did start the whole power trio thing, and when they were on, I can't think of another band that was better.
The doors dont warrant contention IMHO. The music, though good, was overshadowed by the persona of JM and very overrated. Im a fan, but I'd only put them in the top 25. 1)Beatles 2)Who 3)Ramones (progenitors of two rock subgenres Punk and Grunge. 4)Zepplin 5)RADIOHEAD (WAY BETTER THAN U2) Sure, I left out the stones, I dont like them and this is my list.
Aerosmith's early stuff is as good as most rock gets. Has all the ingredients. End of story. Like poster above said, you may not love them, but NO WAY do they fall anywhere near suckage levels.
I like MGS list, but would replace GNR with Iron Maiden or Judas Priest, both part of the British Metal Invasion and both very influential after over 30 years.
