Dobry - a kid's book about Bulgarian peasants that has sat unread on my bookshelf since I was about 10. It's holding my interest, which means it's either really well done or I'm not a very sophisticated reader. Also, Rage by Bachman/Stephen King for the umpteenth time. Probably will end up going through the other three again afterward.
I liked Tipping Point and Blink, not so much for the specific content (had some issues with the thesis he put forth in TP) but rather because it forces a new perspective on events and on change, and new perspectives are always good - broadens the mind, teaches us new ways to think and filter information. Re-reading Good To Great, this time for a class I'm taking. On deck is First, Break All The Rules. Yes, it's B-school. Last book for-fun were two Koontz novels on airplanes - The Good Guy, and The Husband. Easily consumed, easily forgotten. Fun stories, no doubt. Next one of those on-deck is Odd Hours, once it's out in paperback.
Rose Bowl Dreams by Adam Jones. He posts here every once in a while. You may know him from Jones Top Ten. A fantastic writer and I'm looking forward to really digging in to this book, which has been languishing on my nightstand.
The Last 100 Days (about the end of WW2). Good read. Coelecanth's current read, "King Leopold's Ghost" by Adam Hochschild was a real eye opner for me. I highly recommend it.
I finished Blind Man's Bluff a few weeks ago and decided to re-read Big Red . Up next will be Lone Survivor. While were on the topic of books, does anyone have a copy of Sled Driver ? Used copies start at $175 and are difficult to find. I just want to borrow it for a week or so.
Willful Blindness, A Memoir of the Jihad by Andrew C. McCarthy This is one damn good book if you really want to know what went on and how many signs were ignored. McCarthy was a top Fed prosecutor that investigated the 1995 trial of Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman (the blind Sheik) and 11 other terrorists that were conducting a war against the US, including the bombing of the World Trade Center. He also help launch the 9/11 investigation.
Polished off several books while on vacation in Mexico including... Save Me From Myself - Bryan "Head" Welch Secret Servant - Daniel Silva Now reading... The Invention of Morel - Adolfo Bioy Cesares (English translation) The Loved One - Evelyn Waugh
When you are Engulfed in Flames - David Sedaris Bright, Shiny Morning - James Frey Both are really good so far. I second Lone Survivor as an important read.
Just finished The Great Train Robbery and recommend it. Now I am reading The Flashman Papers. I had never heard of this book, nor of Harry Flashman. Basically he is a very interesting guy who in the 1800s in England and wrote an autobiography. He didn't publish it, and his family found it and hid it for many years. It is not a very flattering book. Anyway, the packet of these papers was eventually 'discovered' and arranged for print. Very interesting indeed.
Lone Star: A History of Texas and the Texans - T.R. Fehrenbach The Comanches - T.R. Fehrenbach Ranger's Law - A Lone Star Saga - Elmer Kelton Guess I am on a Texas kick.
Re-reading all the Harry Potter books this summer. Currently almost done with Chamber of Secrets (book 2). I read easy stuff during the summer! Also reading Between A Rock and A Hard Place by Aaron Ralston. The guy has used up 7 of his 9 lives I think. Thanks for the suggestions, too. I have added several here to my list of "must reads".
