Who’s our next HC?

I’m making a case for Mark Turgeon.
Maryland is apparently not pleased with his inability to bring the Terrapins back to national prominence.

But, he’s made the tournament 10 of the past 15 seasons with runs at 3 different schools. (Wichita State, Texas A&M and Maryland). 2 sweet 16’s - Wichita St. in 2006 and Maryland in 2016.

He has nine top 3 conference finishes (in 15 seasons) including the Big 12 and Big 10 (one conference win with the Shockers in 06’).

He recruited DeAndre Jordan, Rasheed Sulaimon, Robert Carter, Donald Sloan, Diamond Stone and Melo Trimble. He’s not really an NBA player developer but he gets McD’s AA’s and Parade AA’s.

His buyout is $2.5M. May be a bit of a stretch. I’m trying to be realistic however.

(For the record I’d obviously rather have Billy Donavan. I just don’t see Texas moving swiftly enough to get him here).

Mark Turgeon would be far better than Shaka. That said, he was a step down from Rick Barnes and I thought the whole point of firing Barnes in the first place is he was "not our standard" and we were supposed to find someone better.

I am pro Billy Donovan or Gregg Marshall.

Beard at Tech would be my first choice, but between his buyout and Shaka's, I know that is unrealistic.

Gregg Marshall would be an excellent hire. His buyout is $6M. I’m betting he’d come here but it would take stupid money. He’s got it made running things in the MO Valley Conference.

Looking around... Baylor currently has top ranked men's and women's basketball teams. Tech (really?) went to the final 4. We love to dump on both of those schools, but hey!. Is our problem really only that we haven't found the right coach? Or is it more systemic? We are a football school. Just look at HF. Basketball teams get one category each, football has multiple sub-categories. And attendance. It was painful to see all the empty seats (even when they were good!). Recruits are bound to see this. Does UT just not really value basketball (at least since the heyday of Jodi Conradt?). Yeah, we're getting a new arena. Nice, but unless the culture changes, neither that, nor new coaches will make much difference. And, speaking of coaches, can we convince a highly successful coach to leave their current position and come here, just because we're Texas? If it was football, perhaps, but basketball...?

We are not an elite basketball program. We are not North Carolina or Kentucky or UCLA. However, if Texas Tech can find a good coach, we can. We found three in Lemons, Penders and Barnes. We have structural difficulties in men's basketball that we do not face in football or baseball, but we can find a LOT of coaches that can do better than Shaka Smart.

As far as women's basketball goes, we are a power there and should be doing a lot better.

Finally, Baylor cheats worse than most programs in everything. They may be one of the dirtiest athletics programs in the USA. When they get caught and punished, they go right back to it as soon as the punishment is over. I do hope that some day, sooner than later, someone puts a permanent stop to it.

See that Bielen is a top candidate now after being fired by Cavs. That would be a tremendous choice. CDC needs to pounce on that. This would be a grand slam

Everyone seems to think that we have to get the "proven name" because Smart was an up-and-comer who just couldn't get the job done. This just gives a bad name to other up-and-comers. There are plenty of other up-and-comers out there who aren't Shaka Smart that could do well given Texas' resources.

While I would love Donovan, that's probably not realistic. Marshall from Wichita State has always been a secret covet of mine, but his salary is already on par with Shaka's and it would be kind of a stretch.

Will Wade is a good name from a powerful program, but since he just got Shaq's son to commit, I doubt he wants to move on quite yet. Plus he's got that cloud of NCAA violations over his head. Chris Jans is a dude who obviously knows how to party, but I haven't seen anyone like that who can just come right in and make a team immediately better. I associate him with the "young guns" because he hasn't coached Division I a long time, but he's 50 years old. He probably won't get a look because of his drunken stupor video, but man we could use a little of whatever he's cooking. Craig Smith from Utah State also seems to be a guy who just "gets it" when it comes to turning around middling teams and making them better.

It might be a bit early for him, but McCasland from UNT also seems to know what he's doing. My biggest concern about him would be that he learned everything from Scott Drew, who I hate with a fiery passion, but that doesn't seem to be affecting Baylor's ability to stay ranked.

Shaka coaching his way into year 2020-2021 !!!!!!!
Or maybe these Big 12 coaches are SMARTer than we think, and are throwing these games so we keep Shaka around. They don't want to lose their edge over Texas.

I get it with Drew. Just looking at him coaching on the sidelines is enough to make me want to go full Elvis and start shooting my TV.
HOWEVER, the fuccer seems to know how to recruit and coach. Maybe I would learn how to like him if he was coaching our Horns and had them in the top 5 looking at a # 1 seed. Mehh, probably not.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Jay Wright or Mark Many. Seems like they have done pretty damn good at schools without a lot of resources. I guess you could argue they don't have Texas ties so may find it difficult to recruit, but whoever is successful on the court can recruit at Texas.

Yeah, that’s not happening. It’d be like the football HC at Texas leaving for Gonzaga or Villanova. We just aren’t a program that draws elite coaches unless we were to pull up to their house with a few Brink’s trucks.

That'd be hilarious if a national champion coach who makes $4MM/year was like "yeah this isn't really working out for me... I think I'll go to the program in the shitter and try to figure out why Texans just don't seem to follow basketball all that much."

Gee, there is a real hot guy in the B12 right now. Coaches at some school in Texas.

Catchy name too. Shaka Smart! Ever heard of him?

Great choices; but neither knows how not to cheat, and Drew's family tree is less than stellar. Let's just say that if either showed up at my family gathering as a potential member, he would leave horizontally.

So Sabre gives Scott Drew a hard "no". Would you settle for Dave Bliss?

Now you have ruined my day by bringing up that name. He was the head of the pimple that when squeezed blew the head off Baylor's ill gotten athletic gains. Unfortunately no one at the Big XII or the NCAA has the balls to do anything about it.

I have been absent from the basketball board for a couple weeks in complete denial about this five game run and the fact that this will save his job. It's absurd to me that winning five in a row is enough to keep him another year with a book of work which shows he's incapable of sustained success.....or really any success.

Remember it took losing almost half the team to injury to get this group on the floor playing together. He has no clue why this is working, but he keeps saying how "the process" is working. Shaka's process is crap. Move on dude!

While last night's win was outstanding, the coaching was far from adequate. Anyone watching that **** show, as to think it was more a case of OU losing than us winning.

That said, again I ask, who is his replacement? OJT or quality? Who will come?

Shaka still sucks. streak or no streak. I'm tired of this regime he gotta go.

Billy D., Beilein, Turgeon, Bray....anyone but Jamie Dixon. We can throw ridiculous amounts of cash at any of them to get them here. Coaching bball at a football school can't be the worst gig going..

Yeah, out-hustling the home team who had over 25 foul shots to Texas' two was pretty bad.

Too bad Abe Lemons s dead, otherwise he would be smoking a big cigar right now.

I am watching the osu game. From what I see the Y leagues have better coaches than what Shaka has put together today.

Middle of the pack? I believe OSU is ranked 8th.
