Overheard in Toms response to a snowflake question during today’s presser. Must be a sign that we are indeed back baby!!
According to wiki: The expression to be worth one's salt, which means you're competent and deserve what you're earning, is most often said to have its roots in ancient Rome, where soldiers were sometimes paid in salt or given an allowance to purchase it.
I missed the show. is there some context? What was Tom asked? Is Tom the one who said something about worth their salt?
Maybe it means that they are going to take up sailing in the off season, as a team-building exercise. You know, become a bunch of old salts.
One of the reporters (Cedric Golden, I think) asked TH if he has asked himself some hard questions this past week. TH gave kind of a non-answer that went something like, "I ask myself hard questions every day. I think anyone worth their salt does that." IMO, the only people who think he said "worth a salt" are those that have never heard of the phrase "worth their salt".
"worth a salt", "worth his salt", and "worth their salt" could sound almost indistinguishable if someone said them quickly. Kinda like "kiss the sky" and "kiss this guy".
Thanks PE I missed the show so did not know if a question came from the audience or if the person asking the question used the expression. It is actually good that Tom is questioning himself. That is what anyone worth their salt does. Hope he gets some good answers from himself
Been a long time since I heard the term. That’s all. Add in that it came from a football coach, It was cool. Come to think of it, don’t recall ever hearing it from anyone other than a coach.
Not sure if Herman is worth his salt or not, but he did say he didn't have time to ask questions of himself, then said he asks questions of himself every day...Huh ? Which is it Tom, or do you need to go back and watch film to see if you had time or actually asked a question of yourself ????
